Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a stylized impact explosion in gold and white superimposed by a gold winged dexter gauntlet grasping a sword point up, wrapping around the bottom and side of the explosion a blue scroll entwined with two sprigs of green hemlock and inscribed AIR ATTACK in gold letters.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue is the primary color associated with Aviation.  The explosion symbolizes air battle and attack from the sky.  The winged gauntlet wielding a sword alludes to military preparedness and vigilance, mobility and attack and defense capabilities.  The hemlock refers to the state of Washington, the home of the unit.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 4 May 1989.
